How to reach Maharashtra's wine & temple capital.

Nashik sits 165 km northeast of Mumbai and 210 km north of Pune. The journey involves climbing the Kasara Ghat of the Sahyadris. With the opening of the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway and high-speed Vande Bharat rail connections, the city is more accessible today than at any point in its history.

Commuter's Golden Rule

The Friday & Sunday Traffic Bottlenecks

1. Leave Mumbai before 06:30 AM: The Thane–Majiwada flyover junction becomes a 45-minute choke point after 7:30 AM.
2. Sunday evening return: Avoid descending Kasara Ghat between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Sunday; heavy truck traffic slows the winding descent.
3. Train is faster on weekends: The Vande Bharat takes exactly 2 hours 55 minutes, avoiding road snarls entirely.

By Road: The Mumbai–Nashik Highway & Expressway

Average Drive Time 3 hrs 30 mins (from Mumbai Suburbs)
Toll Plazas Arjunali (Padgha) & Ghoti FASTag
Key Scenic Pass Kasara Ghat (Thal Ghat)
Cab Cost ₹2,800 – ₹4,500 one-way (Sedan/SUV)

The classic driving route from Mumbai follows NH 160 through Thane, Bhiwandi bypass, Asangaon, and then ascends the famous Kasara Ghat into the cooler climate of Igatpuri before descending smoothly into Nashik. The road is a multi-lane highway throughout with several modern food plazas (such as Food Mall and Vitthal Kamats near Asangaon).

For travelers coming from Nagpur, Amravati, or Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg provides an ultra-fast 120 km/h access-controlled expressway directly into Nashik's southern gateway.

"If hiring a one-way private taxi from Mumbai Airport (BOM), use prepaid counters or app-based outstation cabs (Uber Intercity / MakeMyTrip). Avoid unlicensed touts near the international arrivals curb who quote inflated rates."

Taking the train is the most relaxed and reliable way to travel between Mumbai and Nashik, especially on monsoon weekends when road traffic can back up in Kasara Ghat. Trains depart from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Dadar, traversing the scenic viaducts and tunnels of the Thal Ghat pass.

The Panchvati Express (departing CSMT at 18:15 PM and Nashik Road at 07:00 AM) is a cultural institution: punctual, clean, and carrying a dedicated cohort of local commuters. The newly introduced CSMT–Shirdi Vande Bharat Express stops at Nashik Road and provides comfortable aerodynamically damped chair-car travel with breakfast.

"Nashik Road railway station is situated 10 km east of the city center. Outside the station, take an auto to CBS / Old Gangapur Naka (approx ₹150–₹200) or hop on the air-conditioned Citilinc electric city bus that leaves from the station forecourt every 10 minutes."

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) operates the premium Shivneri air-conditioned service departing every 30 to 45 minutes between Mumbai (Dadar/Thane) and Nashik CBS. These buses are clean, comfortable, and navigate the ghat pass smoothly.

In addition, dozens of private luxury multi-axle sleeper buses (such as Neeta, Purple, and Hans Travels) connect Nashik to Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, and Kolhapur overnight.

Mode 04 / 04 · Aviation OZAR AIRPORT (ISK)

Nashik's commercial airport at Ozar (historically an Indian Air Force and HAL fighter jet manufacturing base) now operates scheduled commercial domestic flights connecting the city to major national metros without needing to travel via Mumbai.

A pre-booked taxi from Ozar Airport into College Road or the Gangapur Road vineyard district costs approximately ₹800–₹1,200.

City Mobility

Getting Around Inside Nashik

How to navigate between Old City ghats, modern College Road, and out-of-town vineyards smoothly.

BEST FOR SHORT TRIPS

Auto-Rickshaws & Rapido

Autos operate everywhere. While city routes use digital meters, always confirm the fare before getting in if traveling beyond municipal limits. The Rapido and Ola auto apps work reliably in urban areas.

CLEAN & MODERN

Citilinc AC Electric City Buses

Nashik's municipal bus service (Citilinc) is among the best in Maharashtra. Air-conditioned, green electric and CNG buses run every 10–15 minutes connecting Nashik Road station, CBS, Panchvati, Gangapur Road, and Satpur.

BEST FOR WINE HOPPING

Dedicated Day Cabs

Cellular connectivity can be patchy around rural vineyard roads in Sanjegaon and Dindori, making return app-cabs difficult to summon. Hire a car for a dedicated 8-hr / 80km package (approx ₹1,800–₹2,500) if visiting multiple wineries.
